The governor of Missouri announced that he is mobilizing the National Guard on Friday as part of the state’s coronavirus response.

Republican Missouri Gov. Mike Parson tweeted Friday morning that he signed an executive order mobilizing the National Guard. His declaration came after the Missouri Health Department reported 502 cases of coronavirus in the state as well as nine deaths from the deadly virus.

“I signed Executive Order 20-06 to begin mobilizing the @Missouri_NG to assist in the state’s COVID-19 response efforts,” Parson tweeted Friday. “Mobilizing the National Guard will help us provide more immediate resources to our citizens and enhance Missouri’s ability to overcome this global pandemic.”

Parson’s announcement came a day after President Donald Trump approved Missouri’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration, which Parson requested March 24. (RELATED: Louisiana Department Of Health Refuses To Specify If Abortions Are Banned)

I appreciate President @realDonaldTrump for acting quickly on my disaster declaration request and the commitment of federal resources as we battle this unprecedented public health and economic threat to Missourians,” Parson tweeted Thursday.

He added: “As I’ve said throughout our COVID-19 response effort, we will continue to pursue every way possible to adapt and deliver additional resources to help protect the health of Missourians and promote long-term recovery.”
