Long-time Democratic strategist James Carville claimed Wednesday night that Republicans “will kill people to stay in power,” decrying Wisconsin’s decision to hold their presidential primary during the coronavirus pandemic.

Carville stated that former Vice President Joe Biden is in “commanding position” to win the presidency, but worried that Republicans would make it harder for people to vote. Biden became the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee Wednesday after Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, his last remaining challenger, ended his campaign. “Trump — all the Republicans admit it, we can’t win if everybody votes,” Carville said. “My kind of mission here in the short term is to sound the alarm to say Mitch McConnell and the Supreme Court, they’re going to do everything they can to hold on to power and Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer we’ve got to dig in and make sure states have funding to conduct these elections and to put pressure on them to make sure they’re done fairly.”

Carville decried the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s ruling mandating that Tuesday’s election go on as scheduled as “one of the most awful things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

The Wisconsin Supreme Court decision came after Democratic Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers suspended the in-person primary.

“Just the extent they’ll go to to hold on to power. It was all about one Supreme Court seat in Wisconsin,” Carville said. “They will kill people to stay in power. Literally.”

Some Democrats have proposed a vote by mail system to keep people from having to physically go to the polls if the pandemic continues, but Republicans have pushed back, arguing that voting by mail will make it easier to commit voter fraud.
