Billionaire Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a letter to shareholders Thursday that repeated testing of people on a “global scale” may be needed to get the economy running again.

“Regular testing on a global scale, across all industries, would both help keep people safe and help get the economy back up and running,” Bezos wrote.

“For this to work, we as a society would need vastly more testing capacity than is currently available. If every person could be tested regularly, it would make a huge difference in how we fight this virus.”

“Those who test positive could be quarantined and cared for, and everyone who tests negative could re-enter the economy with confidence,” he also said.

In the lengthy statement, Bezos also writes about his efforts to keep Amazon workers safe by giving them face masks and temperature checks.

“We regularly sanitize door handles, stairway handrails, lockers, elevator buttons, and touch screens, and disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer are standard across our network.”

He also expresses the possibility of regularly testing all Amazon employees for coronavirus.

“A next step in protecting our employees might be regular testing of all Amazonians, including those showing no symptoms.”

Globally, coronavirus has claimed nearly 140,000 lives. There are over 2 million cases worldwide. (RELATED: US Coronavirus Death Count To Include ‘Probable’ Causes, Could Add Thousands Who Never Tested Positive)
