Green Bay Packers writer Bob McGinn thinks he knows why the team drafted Jordan Love.

The Packers sent shockwaves through the world of football after selecting the former Utah State quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Nobody could believe it, it’s been arguably the biggest storyline since the draft happened and we all know Aaron Rodgers can’t be happy. McGinn thinks he knows why the team pulled the trigger on taking a QB in the first round.

McGinn wrote the following for The Athletic, according to the The New York Post:

Public niceties aside, my sense is LaFleur, fresh from a terrific 13-3 baptismal season, simply had enough of [Aaron] Rodgers’ act and wanted to change the narrative. With a first-round talent on the roster, the Packers would gain leverage with their imperial quarterback and his passive-aggressive style.

This is pretty much what I’ve said to anybody who will listen ever since the pick happened. I honestly believe drafting Jordan Love was about sending a message just as much about preparing for the future.

Aaron Rodgers might be the best player on the team, but it’s not always smooth sailing with him. Look no further than Mike McCarthy’s final years with the team for proof of that.

The Packers have more or less signaled to Rodgers that he’s replaceable just like everybody else. With Love on the roster, the team is taking away some of Rodgers’ leverage.

Love is not ready to play right now, but he could be in a year or two. He has all the physical tools necessary. He’s a freak of nature, but he needs to be polished.

It might be a lot harder for Rodgers to get his way with Love waiting in the wings. The Packers could just move on if they get tired of his antics, which is more or less what McGinn is saying.

We’ll see what happens, but the Packers are now officially one of the biggest stories in all of football and it’s not for a reason that will make Rodgers happy.
