An Atlanta-based company that provides mortgages nationwide said it fired an employee who is a relative of the police officer who is accused of fatally shooting Rayshard Brooks.

Melissa Rolfe is the stepmother of Garrett Rolfe, the Atlanta police officer who shot Brooks in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant June 12, investigators said. The death of Brooks led to protests and to Garrett Rolfe being charged with felony murder.

“Our unwavering commitment to always doing the right thing has led us to sever ties with an employee who has expressed views that do not align with our culture,” Equity Prime Mortgage said in a statement on Twitter. “We do not tolerate racism, discrimination or injustices of any kind.”

Equity Prime Mortgage LLC originally told Melissa Rolfe her position was safe at the company, according to Tucker Carlson, who reported the incident on Thursday night. Then, the company changed its mind and terminated Melissa Rolfe without explanation, Carlson said.

“Melissa Rolfe’s termination was a direct result of her actions in the workplace and violation of company policy,” Equity Prime Mortgage LLC said in a second statement Thursday night following Carlson’s report. “She ultimately lost the confidence of her peers, leadership, and many employees who no longer felt comfortable engaging with her.”

The first statement cited Melissa Rolfe’s views as the reason for her firing, but the second statement said Rolfe’s actions caused her firing. Equity Prime Mortgage LLC did not give specific examples of actions that contributed to her termination. Melissa Rolfe was the company’s Human Resources director, according to an archived copy of the company’s leadership page. She has been erased from the leadership page.
