Many college football stars are expected to skip the upcoming season.

Virginia Tech defensive back Caleb Farley already announced that he was opting out of the college football season to prepare for the NFL draft during the coronavirus pandemic, and more announcements are expected to follow.

Pete Thamel interviewed some power players around the sport, and it sounds like there could be a mass exodus on the horizon.

Private QB coach Quincy Avery expects as many as 40 players to sit out, and an unnamed source told Thamel, “I wouldn’t be surprised if 12 of the 20 top picks don’t play their season. That’s a lot of good players not playing. It only takes one, and other people start to follow.”

I think it’s very likely that we see several more players bounce, and it’s hard to hold it against them.

We’re in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, the college football season has been engulfed by chaos and nobody has a clue about what will happen in the fall.

If you’re an elite talent, you might think it’s more beneficial to spend the year training than dealing with the uncertainty of the college football season.

As long as elite players like Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence don’t leave, then the sport should still have plenty of star power.

Now, if those two bounce for the NFL without playing this season, then college football will take a huge hit.

However, anything short of that, and we’ll be fine.
