Former President Barack Obama delivered a eulogy at the funeral for late Democratic Georgia Rep. John Lewis in July that defended the civil rights leader’s legacy by calling for an end to the filibuster in order to achieve progressive goals.

“And if all this takes eliminating the filibuster — another Jim Crow relic — in order to secure the God-given rights of every American,” he said in his eulogy, “then that’s what we should do.” Obama’s position on the filibuster has flipped completely since he served as an Illinois Senator, but this trend is in keeping with his party. The Democrats’ desire to eliminate the filibuster could make the 2020 election the most important one in American history.
