The philosophical origin of the current wave of cancel culture, protests and “with us or against us” mentality of the social upheaval gripping the nation in 2020 has been developing for nearly a century.

It was created in Germany in the 1920s and migrated to the U.S. just before World War II, where it found fertile ground in America’s universities. It has since permeated the campus and intellectual culture as a whole after it became the dominant academic theory in the late 1960s. The roots of the current unrest coursing through the nation can be traced back to the Frankfurt School and one of its principal ideas: critical theory.
