President Donald Trump has frequently cited a statistic he calls “excess deaths” to argue that the U.S. is actually faring better than Europe with regard to coronavirus, but his media critics argue the stat is bogus.

Also known as “excess mortality,” the statistic Trump is using measures the expected, or “normal,” number of deaths for a given time period against the actual number of deaths for that same period. For instance, by comparing the number average number of deaths the U.S. suffers each year against the actual deaths suffered so far in 2020, one can come to an estimate of how many of those excess deaths are due COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
