A Democratic presidential candidate has not carried the state of Texas since Jimmy Carter narrowly defeated Gerald Ford in 1976, so why is a reliably red state now the linchpin that could spell electoral demise for President Donald Trump?

A New York Times/Siena Poll conducted Sept. 16-22 found that President Donald Trump narrowly leads Democratic nominee Joe Biden by 3%. Additionally, the election polling average in Texas, according to Real Clear Politics, shows a slim 2.3% advantage for Trump over Biden. But historically, Texas has not been as kind to Democratic nominees.
