University of Virginia sociologist James Davison Hunter introduced the contemporary term “culture war” in his 1991 book “Culture Wars: The Struggle to Define America” as a way to describe polarization and realignment in American political culture.

Hunter posited that the “culture war” traces back to the 1960s and represents a struggle between orthodox (or conservative) and progressive forces for dominion over the nation’s institutions. One of the foremost institutions at the center of the “culture war” has arguably been American colleges and universities.
