Though it appears that President Donald Trump will vacate the presidency in Jan. 2021, his performance in the 2020 election, especially among minority voters, has begun discussions about a potential political realignment in the United States. But what is a realignment, exactly?

A political realignment is the sharp or sudden change in a party’s ideology or its support base. There are indications that we could be in the midst of a realignment of the Republican Party toward a party of the working class, regardless of race.
