Public conjecture about the future of the Republican Party after President Donald Trump’s term ends has pointed to a few possible successors — Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton among them.

The 43-year-old Cotton has grown his profile in the GOP as a law-and-order senator who called for “an overwhelming show of force” to control the violent riots that erupted across the country. The New York Times (NYT) op-ed in which he did so, published amid the riots following the death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody, established his position as a bellicose member of the Republican Party.
