In the months leading up to election, Democrats and their various allies promoted a conspiracy theory alleging that President Donald Trump and U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Postmaster General Louis DeJoy were sabotaging the election by withholding money from the post office and locking up mailboxes in order to prevent people from voting by mail.

An unprecedented number of mail-in ballots were cast in this election as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, with more than 65 million Americans voting by mail according to election statistics.
