The famed Times Square New Year’s Eve ball drop will occur without spectators this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This will be the first time the New Year’s Eve ball drop will occur without spectators since 1907, according to an article published by the New York Post. The whole event, including live music performances and the ball drop, usually draws roughly one million spectators to New York City’s Times Square from places all over the world, the outlet reported.

This year, the entire event will be held virtually because of COVID-19. The event will feature virtual, augmented experiences and live camera feeds, the New York Post reported. (RELATED: ‘Alarming Increase’: New York City Sees Uptick In Coronavirus Cases)

It really will not be the same. I can’t believe it’s December and we’re still having to cancel events because of COVID-19. Hopefully now that he vaccine is being distributed, we can start figuring out how to go back to a more normal life than we all live now.

I guess you can watch the ball drop virtually if you’re looking for something to do. There will be virtual events starting Dec. 19th and running all the way through New Year’s Day.

As soon as it’s safe to do so, I will be watching the ball drop from Times Square. Hopefully in 2021.
