Intersectional infighting has broken out among Democrats as President-elect Joe Biden tries to follow through on his promises to staff the most diverse cabinet in recent American history.

Some of the most notable roles in Biden’s cabinet have already been filled by media-lauded “firsts,” such as Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, who could become the first black secretary of defense. Some of his choices have also come under scrutiny from high-ranking members of the left who want more progressive appointments, and fighting over the remaining cabinet and administration posts continues as interest groups advocate for their identity blocs.
