Florida coach Dan Mullen thinks it’s time for the bowl system to change.

With another successful college football season in the books, it’s not time for the annual event of debating playoff expansion. Well, in order for that to happen, the man leading the Gators thinks we need to “let go” of our current bowl system. Mullen said the following about bowls and the playoff during a Monday appearance on ESPN, according to 247Sports:

What bowl games mean are really special. I think when the playoffs started, you knew expansion would have to come. I was watching a clip on the 150th anniversary of college football — just happened to turn it on — and Bobby Bowden is on there saying ‘as long as we keep bowl integrity, we’ll be okay.’ When the playoff started and it went to four games, I think it became a matter of time. Now, is that time now, or in the future? But I think what we have to do to expand the playoffs is be willing to let go of the old system.

I think first and foremost, we have to focus on expanding the playoff. That has to be the main focus and goal number one.

Once we figure out how we’re going to expand the playoff, then we can start focusing on the bowl games.

Having said that, I think we can all agree that we don’t need to be playing so many stupid bowl games. I think the best case scenario is to bring a few more major bowls into the playoff system, keep any bowls left that are solid and then eliminate the rest of them.

I’m sorry, but there’s no reason for Wisconsin to have played in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and I’m saying that as the largest Wisconsin fan on the planet.

As always, I’m for whatever works, and expanding the playoff has to happen. We can worry about the rest after we get that done.
