Democratic Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, a former 2020 presidential candidate, said Monday that he’s considering an election run to replace Republican Sen. Rob Portman.

“I’m overwhelmed by supporters who are reaching out to encourage me to run for Senate. I haven’t made a decision yet but I’m seriously looking at it. Ohio deserves leaders who fight for working people,” Ryan tweeted.

Ryan dropped out of the 2020 Deemocratic presidential primary after he couldn’t gather much attention. The former candidate made the announcement in October 2019 on Twitter.

Ryan campaigned as a moderate who could gain former President Donald Trump’s supporters as opposed to Democratic Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, The Hill reported. Trump and former President Barack Obama both won Ohio twice.

Portman told reporters on Monday that he would retire from his 30-year career in politics, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer. The senator said he wouldn’t not run for re-election in 2022, but will complete his current term, which ends in January 2023. (RELATED: Sen. Portman said “partisan gridlock” and animosity in Washington D.C. are the main reasons for his decision to retire, according to The Enquirer.

“It’s a problem that’s gotten worse in the past couple of decades,” Portman said, according to The Enquirer. “It’s a tough time to be in public service.”

Ryan’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
