How Academics Are Pushing Back On Our Government’s Attempts To Crack Down On Foreign Funding

More than a dozen professors, researchers and students have been arrested on charges of lying about their ties with the Chinese government since 2019, and a prospective new program could shield academics who accept foreign funding from punishment.

The Justice Department is considering an amnesty program that would allow U.S. academics to disclose past foreign funding without fear of retribution, The Wall Street Journal reported. National security officials including Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers have circulated a draft proposal for the amnesty, sources told the Journal.
