A fatal shooting led to a vehicle chase involving police and resulted in one arrest Monday night in New York City, the New York Police Department told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

An unidentified man was fatally shot in Upper Manhattan where police officers responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired, NYPD spokesman Edward Riley told the DCNF. The officers attempted to stop a BMW fleeing the location of the incident but the vehicle accelerated and began a nearly five-mile chase around the length of Central Park, the New York Post reported.

“Upon arrival, officers observed an unidentified adult male, unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head,” Riley told the DCNF. “A firearm was recovered in close proximity to the victim.”

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 05: A police car sits outside of a Times Square substation on November 05, 2019 in New York City. Following a turbulent three-year run as Police Commissioner, James O’Neill announced yesterday his resignation and is to be replaced by Dermot Shea, the current chief of detectives. O'Neill's departure comes months after the firing of former officer Daniel Pantaleo due to his behavior in the incident that led to Eric Garner's death in Staten Island. The NYPD, the nations largest police department, is also facing a crisis of suicides amongst officers with 10 current officers having taken their lives this year alone. The unidentified man was pronounced dead at a local hospital, Riley told the DCNF. (RELATED: Homicides, Shootings Spiked In New York City During 2020 Despite Overall Crime Being Down)

Officers pursued the vehicle and arrested one 33-year-old man and recovered a firearm, according to Riley. The vehicle “continued to flee” after the first arrest and it’s unclear whether the driver was caught or arrested.

It’s unclear whether the two men involved in the chase shot the man found at the scene of the first incident, the Post reported. The men who fled appeared to have been with the victim of the shooting.

Overall crime decreased in the city in 2020, despite a 97% increase in shootings and a 44% increase in murders, the Daily Caller reported. NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said protests advocating to defund the police department combined with COVID-19 complications created a “dark period” for the department, the Associated Press reported.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to Riley.
