ANALYSIS: The Increasingly Woke Oscars Just Had Its Worst Performance Ever

The 70th annual Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, aired in 1998 and saw classic films like “Titanic” and “Good Will Hunting” sweep the nominations along with big Hollywood names like actor Matt Damon and director James Cameron.

The ABC telecast drew in around 55 million viewers, according to CNBC, making that year’s show not only the most watched Oscars broadcast but also the most-watched live awards show in television history. But viewership of the Oscars and similar programs has declined considerably in the last five years, with many blaming the increasingly “woke” culture of awards shows.
