Wisconsin is bound to benefit in a huge way from the College Football Playoff field expanding.

Shockwaves were sent through the sport of college football when it was revealed that the CFP will almost certainly expand to 12 teams in the coming years. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football)

The 12-team field will consist of the six highest-ranked P5 champions and six at-large bids.

Ever since the announcement was made, I can’t stop thinking about how often Wisconsin will likely make a 12-team playoff field.

The answer is that we’ll make it a lot. My most pessimistic projections have us going once every three years. My most optimistic projections have us going more than 50% of the time.

From 2010 through the 2020 season, Wisconsin has finished the season ranked in the top 13 of the AP poll six times, and we’ve won double digit games in seven seasons during that time window.

It’s going to be very hard to keep a 10-2 or an 11-1 Wisconsin team out of the playoff. If we make the Big 10 title game, I’d argue that we’d almost certainly be a lock.

In the ten conference title games that have been held, Wisconsin played in six of them. Again, the numbers speak for themselves.

The expanded field will help a lot of teams, but there might not be a team it helps more than Wisconsin. We’re going to go from having never played in the playoff so far to being in regular attendance. I can’t wait! Go, Badgers, go!
