New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick likes what he’s seen out of quarterback Cam Newton this offseason.

Newton will likely begin the season as the starting quarterback of the Patriots, but there’s a chance Mac Jones is coming for the job sooner than later. However, Newton isn’t just going to give his starting position away. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football)

According to Adam Schefter, Belichick told the media Tuesday, “Cam’s way ahead of where he was last year at this time. There’s no question about that.”

It’s going to be fascinating to see what Belichick does with Newton and Jones this season. By all accounts, Jones has been a way quicker study than most anticipated after being drafted by the Patriots.

There’s no question at all that Jones is the future in New England. He wasn’t a first round pick coming out of Alabama to ride the bench forever.

The question is how long can Newton hold him off before the baton is handed off to the rookie passer.

If Newton is playing much better than he was in 2020, then Jones might be on the bench for awhile.

The good news is that we’re only a few months out from the start of the season! Fans will find out soon enough whether or not Newton can get back to his old ways or if Jones’ number will be called early in the season.
