A New York state court suspended Rudy Giuliani’s law license Thursday over his “demonstrably false and misleading statements” about election fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Giuliani had been a member in good standing of the New York State Bar since 1969, according to The New York Times. He served as U.S. Attorney for Manhattan during the Reagan administration when he rose to prominence as the lead prosecutor for the Mafia Commission Trial.

During his role as former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, however, Giuliani “made knowingly false and misleading factual statements to support his claim that the presidential election was stolen from” Trump. Those statements “threaten the public interest and warrant interim suspension from the practice of law,” the Supreme Court of the State of New York’s Appellate Division ruled.
Giuliani claimed to a Pennsylvania court that “widespread, nationwide voter fraud” impacted the state’s vote count during the 2020 presidential election. Giuliani made those claims despite the fact that he “had to be aware that there were no fraud claims in the case,” according to the New York court. Giuliani also alleged that “famous heavyweight boxer Joe Frazier continued to vote years after he was dead,” as part of his legal efforts. However, he “fail[ed] to provide a scintilla of evidence for any of the varying and wildly inconsistent numbers of dead people he factually represented voted,” according to the New York court.
Dominion Voting Systems, a company that provides election software and voting booths, is currently suing Giuliani in a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit. The former New York mayor and presidential candidate is also under investigation for a violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
