A 7-year-old girl was shot and killed Sunday in Chicago while sitting in a parked vehicle, CNN reported.

Along with the 7-year-old victim, the unknown suspect also shot her 6-year-old sister in the car, according to CNN. The younger sister suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and right armpit and is “fighting for her life.”

The sisters were being put into the backseat of the car by their mother when the suspect shot the girls according to Chicago Police Commander Brian McDermott, according to CNN. (RELATED: Rapper Shot 64 Times After Being Released From Jail In Chicago)

Police do not believe that the sisters or their mother were targeted in the shooting.

“I’m lost, I’m lost … I mean they were my life, my everything,” the girls’ grandmother Regina Broughton said, according to ABC7 Chicago. “How do you prepare yourself for something like this? She was a beautiful child. Her spirit was beautiful, innocent, everything about her was innocent.”

Over the weekend, 42 people were shot in Chicago, with four of them dying from their injuries, according to CNN. Last weekend, 66 people were shot and eight died, including a police officer, from their injuries.

Over 250 children have been shot and 32 have been killed in Chicago so far in 2021, according to statistics from ABC7 Chicago.
