Digital media platform OnlyFans announced Thursday that it will begin blocking pornography starting in October.

“Effective Oct. 1, 2021, OnlyFans will prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually explicit conduct,” the UK-based company said in a statement. “In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines.”

“Creators will continue to be allowed to post content containing nudity as long as it is consistent with our Acceptable Use Policy.” OnlyFans’ current terms allow nudity with the exception of content broadcasted in places where public nudity is illegal.

“These changes are to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers,” the company added.

“OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform,” the statement went on to say. “All creators are verified prior to being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content is checked by automated systems and human moderators.”

Founded in 2016, OnlyFans has attracted more than 130 million users and 2 million creators. It it most commonly associated with sex workers and grew largely with the help of adult entertainment stars charging their fans a monthly subscription fee to see their intimate photos and videos. The highest earners on the platform can make upwards of a million dollars per month.

OnlyFans, however, has struggled to attract investors and has reportedly begun looking at ways to move away from their porn reputation in order to attract a wider audience. (RELATED: YouTube Star Corinna Kopf Says She Made $1 Million In Her First 48 Hours On OnlyFans)

The company last year made $2 billion in sales with the site taking a 20% fee, yielding more than $400 million in total revenue.
