Life has always been and always will be a potential minefield. Obstacles and hurdles are waiting to trip you up at every corner and turn. Some will prove only minor inconveniences, others are capable of causing life-long hindrances if you fail to adequately circumvent them. You may believe the biggest hurdles you will face in life will be other people, challenging circumstances, financial difficulties, or a self-limiting environment. You’d be wrong! The biggest hurdle you need to surpass, as Addison Hellum is keen to point out, is your own mindset!

“Whenever I hear people lament and blame other people or certain circumstances for their failure to be exactly where they want to be in life, I have limited patience,” says Addison Hellum. She elaborates, “Nine times out of ten the biggest reason for someone’s failure is their mindset. It may sound harsh but it’s the truth! We all take knocks and setbacks in life, some harder than others, but what matters is how you approach those cruel blows. Those with a positive mindset will pick themselves up and say, ‘Okay, that approach didn’t work but I’m not going to let it defeat me.’ They will then go back to the drawing board to devise a plan B. On the other hand, those with a negative mindset will simply walk away with their tail between their legs, feeling sorry for themselves. It’s not about the obstacles; it’s all about how you approach them.”

As someone who created her own record company Starling at a very young age, California-born Addison Hellum knows all about approaching challenging circumstances with an impregnable mindset and insists it’s the only approach that counts. She says, “You can be your own worst enemy or your own best friend. The choice is yours. Most obstacles in real life are not as formidable as they appear to your mind’s eye. The trick is to defeat them in your mind and then when it comes to tackling them in reality, let me assure you, it’ll be a walk in the park.”
