President Joe Biden promised to get women back to work through the Build Back Better Act, which he says makes caregiving more accessible and more affordable.

“Nearly 2 million women in our country have been locked out of the workforce because they have to care for a child or an elderly relative at home,” Biden commented on Twitter. “My Build Back Better Act will make caregiving accessible and affordable and help them get back to work.”

As the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. in early 2020, nearly 3.5 million mothers with young children wither lost their jobs, took leaves of absence or left the labor market, the Associated Press reported. “Yet again government bureaucrats send the message that someone other than you should be taking care of your children,” National Review writer Alexandra DeSanctis Marr commented on Twitter.

A 2019 Gallup poll found that 50% of mothers with children under 18 preferred the homemaker role to working outside the home. While unemployment rate for working mothers shrank from 2020 to 2021, some mothers exited the workforce entirely.

Homeschooling has also soared in popularity since the beginning of the pandemic with over 11% of families with school aged children homeschooling in fall 2021 compared to a high of around 3% in 2012, according to the Census Bureau.

The Build Back Better Act includes what Republican Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy called a “federal takeover of daycare, childcare, [and] early childhood education.” The bill would also block religious organizations from receiving any of the new federal funding for its childcare programs, the New York Post reported.
