When Benquan Petty enrolled in college, his vision was clear. He was going to play basketball and pursue mass communication and media studies. Then, he was going to become a master videographer and broadcaster and become rich. However, his college experience did not go as he’d envisioned. The basketball scholarship he’d been hoping for fell through and left him on a path set towards debt. And, inconceivably, he started losing his passion for the sport he had loved since he was a child.
One day, one of his friends invited him to a study group class and inadvertently set him on a course that would change his life forever. Someone in the class introduced him to the Honorable Louis Farrakhan’s teachings on YouTube. Benquan found the Minister riveting and started looking for more. In the process, he came across a lecture the Minister gave on debt where he insisted it was slavery. Shortly after, he joined the Nation of Islam and became staunch Brother Ben X. Pondering the direction his life was headed in, Brother Ben X chose to drop out of college and pursue success in other ways.
Initially, he did odd jobs to earn a living while perfecting his videography skills during his free time. Utilizing the steal-away lessons Minister Farrakhan taught, Brother Ben X steadily acquired everything he’d need later. Instead of focusing on personal stuff like a new pair of shoes, he used that money to buy cameras. Soon, he had different kinds of cameras and tripods. He also took courses to learn how others were doing it and succeeding. Before long, he was well set with the proper tools and required techniques. It was finally time to pursue his dreams fully.
The beginning was not pretty. Each month was different from the other. Some months the check would be big, but the next one, he’d struggle to pay his bills. Dedicated to proving himself, however, Brother Ben X persevered. He perfected his skills and went even harder on his YouTube videos. Today, his channel, BBX News, has over 50,000 subscribers. Additionally, he has established himself on other social media platforms. He boasts of a cumulative viewership of over 500M and 1M subscribers across.
Outside his social media ventures, Brother Dr. Ben X also serves as the co-chairperson of Assets Before Splurging. The business is an educational company that teaches students how to build, grow, and expand their businesses without depending on the bank. Primarily, ABS targets underrepresented people. It then provides them with practical solutions with the potential to change every facet of their lives.
Currently, ABS offers books, courses, and consultation services. One of their best-selling courses is the Digital Real Estate Course, which teaches brick-and-mortar businesses how to expand into the online space. It also teaches new entrepreneurs how to build their online presence, start their own online business, and sell their products efficiently.
The course has over 1,100 active students at the moment, and hundreds more have benefitted from it. It has enabled some to leave their jobs and establish their own thriving online businesses. It has also helped others expand their current businesses to become 6-figure companies.
Recently, Brother Dr. Ben X turned to authorship to cater to people who prefer reading to watching videos. His book Separation or Death: Mindset of Self-Employment at Tampa Black Heritage Festival was his trial run. He hopes to write more books in the future.
