Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis slammed journalists Thursday for being obsessed with the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol building.

DeSantis made the comments at a press conference about coronavirus testing in Florida, according to Business Insider.

“This is their Christmas: January 6,” DeSantis said, reported Business Insider. “They are going to take this and milk this for anything they can to be able to smear anyone who ever supported Donald Trump.”

Business Insider asked DeSantis to comment on the Capitol riot anniversary and whether he planned to speak with former President Donald Trump on Thursday.

DeSantis answered the question by saying efforts to compare the Jan 6. Capitol riot to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack is an “insult” to first responders, reported Business Insider.

The hashtag #January6th was trending Thursday on Twitter as people tweeted their opinions on the one-year anniversary of the Capitol riot.

“January 6 allows them to create narratives that are negative about people that supported Donald Trump,” DeSantis continued, Business Insider reported. (RELATED: Jan 6 Committee – Which Claims Not To Be Political – Wants To Turn Probe Into Prime Time TV)

DeSantis went on to bash journalists for spending comparatively little time covering the 2017 congressional baseball practice shooting that injured Republican Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and others, reported the outlet.

“That was like a one-day, two day story,” DeSantis said. “That was not something that the Capitol-based press wanted to talk about. Why? Because it totally undercut their preferred narratives.”

President Joe Biden delivered remarks Thursday morning in Statuary Hall to mark the one-year anniversary of the Capitol riot, according to ABC News.

“What did we not see? We didn’t see a former president who had just rallied the mob to attack sitting in the private dining room off the oval office in the White House watching it all on television,” Biden said, reported ABC News. “And doing nothing. For hours. As police were assaulted. Lives at risk. The nation’s capital under siege.”
