A Maryland family allegedly found a suspected intruder who was trapped in their home’s chimney Saturday.

Ibrar Khan called police after reportedly hearing strange noises, but it was not until he called the police a second time that they realized someone was trapped in the chimney, WRC-TV reported. (RELATED: Man Fatally Shoots Home Intruder After Gunfire Battle)

The incident occurred in the family’s home on Dameron Drive around 3 a.m. when Khan reportedly heard noises in the home. “I kept hearing some really loud banging noises, some thudding noises, like something was banging the wall,” Khan said, according to WRC-TV.

Khan called the police after he could not find the source of the noise, according to the outlet.

Police came to investigate the home and the yard, but claimed they could not find any evidence of an intruder, WRC-TV reported.

The noises continued about an hour after police left and were reportedly coming from inside a wall of the home, according to WRC-TV.

Khan called the police again and they followed the source to the wall above the fireplace, according to the Washington Post.

Firefighters were then called to the scene to find the source of the noises in the chimney. They spent the next 90 minutes removing parts of the wall and bricks with rescue equipment, including ladders, lights and shovels, to discover that an adult man had been trapped in there, according to the outlet.

The man was taken to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries, but he is expected to make a recovery, according to WRC-TV.

Khan and his family did express worry for the man, but were also grateful that his alleged break-in was not successful, according to the outlet.
