Six students and a coach were among the nine victims of a fatal car crash Tuesday in New Mexico, according to reports.

The tragedy unfolded Tuesday night when a pickup truck crossed the dividing line of a highway and slammed into a vehicle that was carrying members of the University of Southwest men and women’s golf team, Sgt. Steven Blanco with the Texas Department of Public Safety said, according to ESPN.

Blanco said “both vehicles caught fire and burned,” according to CNN.

The team was on their way back from a tournament in Midland, Texas, according to the report. Two students in the vehicle were airlifted to a Lubbock hospital in critical condition while six other students and the coach, who was driving, were killed, ESPN reported.

“It’s a very tragic scene,” Blanco reportedly said. “It’s very, very tragic.” (RELATED: Man Pleaded Guilty To Speeding Prior To Separate Crash That Killed 9 People, Including Himself)

The driver and passenger of the pickup truck that collided with the team were also killed.

University of Southwest President Quint Thurman said Wednesday that the university is “devastated and deeply saddened to learn about the loss of our student’s lives and their coach,” according to ESPN.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the university said an investigation is ongoing and counseling is available for students and staff.
