SENATORS SIGNAL STRATEGIES IN DAY ONE OF KBJ HEARINGS … Senators Signal Three Issues That Will Define The Ketanji Brown Jackson Hearings

Senators are signaling that they will home in on personal background, criminal sentencing and court-packing during the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. […]

Obama nominated Jackson to serve as vice chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, a position she served in from 2010 to 2014. During her time on the Commission, Jackson recommended that it reduce sentencing guidelines for federal drug charges, and voted to make the reduction retroactive. She also served as a federal public defender. […]

Some Republicans are expected to zero in on Jackson’s sentencing decisions in several cases related to the possession of child pornography. Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, referencing 10 cases in which Jackson departed from federal sentencing guidelines, voiced his concern that a record like Jackson’s “endangers our children.”

‘YOU’RE JUST HERE TO DO A GOTCHA… WHEN YOU KNOW AND HAVE THE FACTS, GET BACK TO ME’ … ‘You Don’t Know’: Sen. Josh Hawley Hits Back At Reporter Claiming He Voted For Judges Soft On Child Porn Offenders (AUDIO)

Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley hit back at a reporter Monday questioning his alleged past support of judges with a lenient record surrounding child pornography cases.

ABC News Congressional correspondent Rachel Scott pressed the senator after reciting his opening statement at the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson, where he raised concern about Jackson’s record on child pornography cases.

“But how is it acceptable for a lower court, if it’s not acceptable for a higher court,” Scott asked. Hawley responded that he does not know which judges she referred to.

“We have looked through your record and it shows that you have voted for at least three federal judges that have imposed lighter sanctions on child porn offenders, so how do you square that?” Scott continued.

“Same answer, not for this court,” Hawley replied. “And, I think this pattern is going to be a problem wherever I’m aware of it. In this instance, I know that’s a White House talking point, but I think it’s a dangerous one. You gotta be careful with that. It’s the old ‘Well, everyone else is jumping off a cliff, so I will too.’”

‘They Will Crush You’: Sen. Cruz Calls Out Democrats For Their ‘Explicitly Racial’ Filibustering Of Black And Hispanic Nominees (VIDEO)

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called out Democrats for filibustering black and Hispanic judicial nominees at Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing on Monday.

“The senior Democrats in this committee happily filibustered Judge Janice Rogers Brown, the very qualified African American woman nominated to the D.C. Circuit,” Cruz began. “And they did so precisely because they wanted to prevent Judge Brown from becoming Justice Brown, the first African American woman. Joe Biden was among the Democrats the first African American woman nominated to the D.C. Circuit.”

Former President George W. Bush nominated Brown to the D.C. Circuit in 2003 but was immediately met with opposition by Senate Democrats, who argued that her reported ideological stances were “out of the legal mainstream,” The Washington Post reported. After two years, Brown was re-nominated and confirmed by a 56-43 vote.

The senator then pointed to Senate Democrats filibuster the nomination of Miguel Estrada, a Honduran immigrant nominated by Bush to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals. A memo to Democratic Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin called Estrada “especially dangerous” because “he is Latino, according to the Washington Times.

“They were explicitly racial, if you are Hispanic or African American and you dare depart from their political orthodoxy, they will crush you, they will attack you, they will slander you, they will filibuster you,” Cruz continued. “So this is not about race.”

‘NOW’S THE TIME WHEN THINGS ARE SHIFTING’ … Biden: ‘There’s Going To Be A New World Order’ (VIDEO)

President Joe Biden said Monday there would be “a new world order” established and led by the United States while speaking at a roundtable to discuss Russia’s war on Ukraine and the economy.

“You know we are at an inflection point, I believe, in the world economy — not just the world economy, in the world. Occurs every three or four generations,” Biden said. “As one of the top military people said to me in a security meeting the other day, 60 million people died between 1900 and 1946, and since then, we’ve established a liberal world order and that hadn’t happened in a long while.”

“A lot of people died but nowhere near the chaos, and now is the time when things are shifting. There’s going to be a new world order out there. We’ve got to lead it, and we’ve got to unite the rest of the free world in doing it,” he continued.

BIDEN HANDS UKRAINE OUR SOVIET STOCKPILE… WSJ: U.S. Sending Soviet Air Defense Systems It Secretly Acquired to Ukraine

WASHINGTON—The U.S. is sending some of the Soviet-made air defense equipment it secretly acquired decades ago to bolster the Ukrainian military as it seeks to fend off Russian air and missile attacks, U.S. officials said.

The systems, which one U.S. official said include the SA-8, are decades old and were obtained by the U.S. so it could examine the technology used by the Russian military and which Moscow has exported around the world.

The weapons are familiar to Ukraine’s military, which inherited this type of equipment following the breakup of the Soviet Union.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the U.S. decision to reach into its little-known arsenal of Soviet weapons, which comes as the Biden administration is mounting a major push to expand Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

PRO-KREMLIN PAPER REVEALS RUSSIAN ESTIMATE OF DEATH TOLL: 9,861… YAROSLAV TROFIMOV: Komsomolskaya Pravda, the pro-Kremlin tabloid, says that according to Russian ministry of defense numbers, 9,861 Russian soldiers died in Ukraine and 16,153 were injured. The last official Russian KIA figure, on March 2, was 498. Fascinating that someone posted the leaked number.

FLASHBACK… LAST WEEK… AT LEAST 7,000 RUSSIAN TROOPS ARE DEAD, ACCORDING TO US ESTIMATES… NYT: As Russian Troop Deaths Climb, Morale Becomes an Issue, Officials Say

WASHINGTON — In 36 days of fighting on Iwo Jima during World War II, nearly 7,000 Marines were killed. Now, 20 days after President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia invaded Ukraine, his military has already lost more soldiers, according to American intelligence estimates.

The conservative side of the estimate, at more than 7,000 Russian troop deaths, is greater than the number of American troops killed over 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

It is a staggering number amassed in just three weeks of fighting, American officials say, with implications for the combat effectiveness of Russian units, including soldiers in tank formations. Pentagon officials say a 10 percent casualty rate, including dead and wounded, for a single unit renders it unable to carry out combat-related tasks.

With more than 150,000 Russian troops now involved in the war in Ukraine, Russian casualties, when including the estimated 14,000 to 21,000 injured, are near that level. […]

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said this week that an estimated 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in the war.

UKRAINE CLAIMS 15,000 KILLS… CNBC: Zelenskyy calls for more pressure on Moscow as Ukraine says 15,000 Russian troops have been killed

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for more pressure on Russia as the war appears to be entering a period of stalemate.

Amid few wins for Russia’s forces, and a continuing staunch resistance from Ukraine, Kyiv claimed on Tuesday that around 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed so far in the fighting.

U.S. President Joe Biden has said Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s “back is against the wall” and he could resort to using more severe tactics in Ukraine.

NEW PLAN FOR RUSSIA? … WSJ: Russia Relies Increasingly on Missiles, Artillery to Pressure Ukraine

As its military offensive against Ukraine has stalled, Russia is increasingly bombing civilian areas in what is evolving into a war of attrition aimed at pressuring the government in Kyiv into granting concessions and acquiescing to Moscow’s demands.

The seeming tactical shift comes as President Biden is heading to Europe this week for meetings with allies and partners in NATO, the G-7 and European states, including Poland. They are expected to discuss deterrence efforts, humanitarian relief and the campaign of sanctions against Russia.

Russia’s foreign ministry on Monday warned relations between Moscow and Washington were “on the verge of a rupture.” Moscow summoned U.S. Ambassador John Sullivan on Monday to hand him a note of protest over Mr. Biden’s comment that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is a “war criminal.”

ABANDON SHIP … DAILY MAIL: Kamala loses her TENTH staffer since June: VP’s National Security Adviser Nancy McEldowney joins staff exodus after widely-criticized trip to Poland and Romania

Vice President Kamala Harris’s National Security Adviser Nancy McEldowney is stepping down, the White House revealed Monday, the tenth staffer to leave her office since June.

McEldowney will be succeeded by her deputy Philip Gordon, according to an announcement by the Vice President’s office. He currently serves as special assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser to the vice president.

Both McEldowney and Gordon have been with the White House since the start of the Biden administration and advised both Harris and President Biden on affairs such as Afghanistan, Iran, Ukraine and cybersecurity issues.

McEldowney said that she is stepping down to ‘focus on some pressing personal matters’ but will remain an impassioned supporter of the Biden Harris administration.

‘This was a difficult decision because I am so deeply committed to the work we do and the crucial national interest we serve. But after more than a year, this is the right decision for my family,’ she said.

FOR THE FIRST TIME, SOUTH KOREAN COVID CASES SKYROCKET… BUT DEATHS DON’T… COUNTRY IS HEAVILY VACCINATED… ALLAHPUNDIT: South Korea’s COVID outbreak is bananas

From February 2020 all the way to January 2022 without a blip. South Korea was the proof that mass contagion by the coronavirus wasn’t inevitable, that it could be controlled by a population that took precautions diligently and by a government that was serious about using technology to facilitate contact tracing. The Koreans had beaten COVID.

Then Omicron and its more infectious subvariant, BA.2, showed up. Look again at the Y-axis in the graph above and gape at the number of cases South Korea is suddenly recording. A country of 52 million people is averaging 400,000 per day lately, tantamount to around 2.5 million per day in the U.S. when adjusted for population. The peak of the actual U.S. Omicron wave this winter was an average of 800,000 per day. They’re doing three times as many cases per capita as we did at our peak.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS URGE STUDENTS TO HIDE LGBT CONVERSATIONS FROM PARENTS… Texas Elementary Schoolers Told To Keep Pride Week ‘Community Circles’ ‘Confidential’

Five-year-old students were told to keep conversations about LGBT topics “confidential,” sparking backlash online about whether parents were informed about the school’s agenda.

Austin Independent School District (AISD) in Texas is slated to celebrate Pride Week in all public school buildings from March 21-26. Each day of the week has a specific Pride celebration theme, according to the school’s website. Students and staff can collect “Pride and Ally stickers, posters, flags, pronoun buttons and more” from their school’s front office.

One activity for elementary students drew the ire of parents in the district and online. AISD’s Doss Elementary encouraged students to keep specific conversations between students and teachers regarding LGBT issues “confidential.”

NY POST: Video shows preschoolers chanting they want Joe Biden out during class

A Southern California preschool teacher has sparked outrage after a video captured her leading her students in a chant that called for President Biden to leave office.

The clip showed the unnamed educator at the Turning Point Christian School in Norco asking the 4- and 5-year-old students, “Who’s our president?”

The kids shout in unison, “Biden!”

“What do we want to do with him?” the teacher asks.

“We want him out!” her students yell back on Presidents’ Day.

STORMY OWES TRUMP MONEY… CNBC: Porn star Stormy Daniels loses appeal in Trump case, owes former president almost $300,000

Porn star Stormy Daniels is on the hook to pay former President Donald Trump nearly $300,000 in attorneys’ fees after a federal appeals court rejected her bid to overturn a lower court decision in her failed defamation lawsuit against him.

Friday’s ruling, which Trump bragged about in a statement issued Monday night, likely puts to bed a yearslong legal feud between Daniels and the ex-president related to her claim that they had sex one time in 2006.

That feud has featured both of their former lawyers being convicted of felonies that were connected to the effects of her claim. Trump denies having had sex with the adult film actress.

In its decision Friday, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit said it had no jurisdiction over Daniels’ appeal of the attorneys’ fees issue because she failed to file a notice of appeal within a 30-day deadline of a federal judge granting the fees to Trump.
