The wife of a North Carolina firefighter was arrested for allegedly murdering her husband after she called 9-1-1 to report a “self-inflicted” gunshot wound, local authorities said Wednesday.

Local police received an emergency call from Mishael “MJ” James Auman’s wife, Heather Hicks Auman, regarding an alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound June 25. “My husband has shot himself…hurry, he needs help…we were just fussing, he told me he couldn’t do it anymore and he pulled out his gun,” Heather said during the emergency call, WFMY reported.

Authorities rushed to help, but Auman later died in the hospital, the Randolph County Sheriff’s office said in a statement. (RELATED: ‘We Lost A True Hero’: Volunteer Firefighter Dies Responding To Blaze On Final Night Of Duty)

The 37-years-old wife was arrested as the result of an investigation June 29, and is currently held in the Randolph County Detention Center with no bond. She was charged with first-degree murder and will be tried in court July 1.

A 21-year member of the Seagrove Rural Volunteer Fire Department, Auman “had very strong ties to especially Randolph County,” a Facebook post from the department reads. (RELATED: Family Of Firefighters Lose One Of Their Own In Blaze That Killed Another, Injured 8 Other Firefighters)

“MJ’s infectious smile, outgoing personality, and willingness to serve others will forever be missed throughout our county’s fire service,” Fire Marshal Erik Beard told WFMY.
