UPDATE: This piece has been updated to reflect gas prices from November 2020 and November 2021, provided by AAA.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson tore into the Biden administration’s claims about Russian President Vladimir Putin being responsible for high gas prices on his show Wednesday night.

“We feel, since this is a news network, a moral responsibility to prove it’s untrue, so here we go,” Carlson said, referring to Biden’s claims that Putin caused gas prices to go up. “Months before the war in Ukraine began, somehow, Vladimir Putin secretly seized control of gas prices in the United States – how did he do that?” (RELATED: ‘People Wonder What Planet He Is On’: Steve Forbes Torches Biden’s Finger-Pointing On Bad US Economy)

“Sober people at a petroleum analysis firm called GasBuddy decided to do a simple calculation,” Carlson said. “They wanted to put rising gas prices in context. Here’s what they did: Math. They determined every year over year price change going back 20 years.”

Carlson noted that GasBuddy tracked a 66% increase in the price of gas from November of 2020 to November of 2021, three months before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In November 2020, the average price of gas was $2.122, according to AAA. In November 2021, that price went up to $3.403.

The current average price of a gallon of gasoline is $4.759 according to AAA, down from a high of $5.016.

“This happened before Russia invaded Ukraine,” Carlson said. “Why did it happen? Super simple: Joe Biden, on the campaign trail, told us he was like superman, then proceeded to jump off the garage. He told us he would end fossil fuel.”

Biden has repeatedly called high rates of inflation the “Putin price hike,” a term repeated by MSNBC, NBC and CNN. Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell told the Senate Banking Committee last month inflation was high in December.

Experts have stated that the Biden administration’s hostility to the fossil fuel industry contributed to high gas prices. The Biden administration revoked a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline in January 2021, canceled a planned offshore lease sale in May and asked a court to uphold a ban on oil and gas lease sales in June.
