An Iranian bride died on her wedding day in early July when a stray bullet struck her during a traditional celebration, according to a report.

Mahvash Leghaei, 24, was toasting to her new marriage in Firuzabad city when a 36-year-old male guest began firing a “high powered hunting rifle” as part of a traditional, illegal Middle Eastern celebration, News AU reported. Leghaei was struck in the skull by one of the bullets, which also hit two male wedding guests, according to the outlet.

The bride was rushed to hospital where she subsequently died, according to News AU. The shooter, who is reportedly a cousin of the groom, fled the scene before being found by police, the outlet reported. He was still carrying the rifle when he was tracked down. “The officers discovered that somebody had fired shots with a hunting rifle as part of the local nomad tradition,” a local law enforcement spokesperson Colonel Mehdi Jokar said, according to the outlet. “But unfortunately because of the crowds and the person’s poor control of the weapon, he managed to shoot three people – two men and the bride.”

The two men recovered from their minor injuries, the New York Post reported.

The incident is the latest death from traditional firing after wedding ceremonies, the New York Post reported. During an incident in India in June, a groom shot one of his guests to death with a pistol.
