Homicide rates in America’s 50 most populated cities have risen 18% between 2020 and 2022, according to data released Tuesday.
WalletHub compared per capita homicide data from 50 of the largest U.S. cities from the second quarter of 2022 with the same time in 2021 and 2020 to determine the average.
New Orleans, Baltimore, Louisville, Milwaukee and Washington, D.C., topped the list of the highest increase in homicide rates during the time period. Predominantly Democrat-run cities have had the highest rise in homicide rates when compared to Republican-led cities, WalletHub noted.
Tucson, Omaha, Lincoln, Madison, Wisconsin, and Garland, Texas, had the lowest rates of increase, according to WalletHub.

Three key metrics were used to determine the findings by WalletHub, which included homicides per capita in Q2 2022, change in homicides (Q2 2022 vs Q2 2021) and change in homicides (Q2 2021 vs Q2 2020), collected from local crime statistics. WalletHub released a study in July that found Louisiana, Alabama, West Virginia, and Wyoming have the idlest youth, which one professor suggested is the reason for increases in violent crime, along with movements to defund the police. Violent crime has spiked in Democrat-run cities since 2021, with six major U.S. cities reporting historic increases in crime.
