Representatives for British actor Dev Patel confirmed he stopped a knife fight in Australia late Monday local time.

“We can confirm that last night, in Adelaide, Dev Patel and his friends witnessed a violent altercation that was already in progress outside of a convenience store,” Patel’s representatives told BBC News. A 32-year-old man was reportedly engaged in a fight with a woman in a convenience store and in the street of the Australian city when the man was stabbed in the chest, the outlet noted.

“Dev acted on his natural instinct to try and de-escalate the situation and break up the fight,” his representatives continued, according to the outlet. “The group was thankfully successful in doing so and they remained on site to ensure that the police and eventually the ambulance arrived.”

The victim is expected to recover, BBC noted. (RELATED: GRAPHIC: Wild Street Fight Caught On Video Ends In Stabbing Death, Murder Charge)

Patel’s representatives hope the level of media attention the story is receiving will be a “catalyst” for politicians and lawmakers to determine long-term solutions to help those involved and the wider Adelaide community, BBC reported. “There are no heroes in this situation and sadly this specific incident highlights a larger systemic issue of marginalised members of society not being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” the statement noted.

Patel is a multi-award-winning actor, starring in films such as “Lion” and “Slumdog Millionaire,” according to his IMDb page. He was nominated for an Oscar for “Lion,” and won a BAFTA for his role in the same film, the site noted.

Patel currently resides in Australia while on a hiatus from acting, Variety noted. He’ll make his directorial debut in Netflix’s $30 million movie “Monkey Man,” which is expected to be released later in 2022, according to Deadline.
