If Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney runs for president in 2024 as an independent, she would take more votes away from President Joe Biden than former President Donald Trump, effectively handing the election to Trump, a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll found.

Cheney lost her primary in August to Trump-backed challenger Harriet Hageman. A vocal opponent of former President Donald Trump, Cheney has said she is “thinking about” running for president in 2024.

The poll found that 11% of likely 2024 voters would vote for Cheney if she ran as an independent in the next presidential election cycle. Cheney’s name on the ballot could bring support for Biden down from 46% to 32%, but would lower Trump’s support from 42% to 40%. (RELATED: ANALYSIS: Will The Republican Party Move On From Trump? Nineteen percent of those polled said Cheney should run for president, compared with 51% who said she should not. Among Democrats, 30% said she should run, and 10% of Republicans said the same.

Given the choice between Trump, Florida Gov. Ron Desantis, and Cheney, 53% of Republican voters ranked Trump as their top choice. Thirty percent of Republicans picked DeSantis, with 6% picking Cheney.

The poll was conducted between Aug. 18 and 22, and surveyed 1,563 American adults. The margin of error was about 2.6%.
