A postal worker died in Florida after being attacked by a pack of dogs Sunday.

Pamela Jane Rock, 61, was in a rural part of the state when her vehicle broke down Sunday afternoon near the Interlachen Lake Estates area, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses told officers they heard a woman screaming for help and found her on the ground outside with five dogs attacking her, the Sheriff reported.

Several neighbors rushed to help Rock, trying to pull the dogs off of her, while another neighbor shot a rifle into the ground in an attempt to scare the dogs away, the Sheriff’s office continued. By the time emergency services arrived, the neighbors and the dogs’ owner had managed to contain the animals, the statement noted.

Deputies provided first aid as soon as they arrived on scene before transporting Rock to HCA Florida Putnam Hospital. She was then transported to a trauma center in Gainesville hospital, where she died Monday evening, the department reported.

Animal Control took all five of the dogs into custody and they will be humanely euthanized, the Sheriff’s noted. “We are in frequent communications with the state attorney’s office as we explore options as far as possible criminal cases as this case continues,” Putnam County Sheriff Chief Deputy Colonel Joseph Wells said Tuesday, according to CNN.
