The Biden administration is marking a day of action on Friday to protect abortion access, pressuring red states to perform abortions after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, according to Axios.
The day of action comes as President Joe Biden meets with Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and state and local elected officials on Friday to discuss how the federal government can help them protect abortion access, Axios reported. HHS is issuing a letter with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services telling governors that providers must comply with federal laws protecting access to emergency health care, even if their state bans abortion.
HHS is also releasing a report, Axios reported, responding to Biden’s July executive order instructing it to help the administration “protect and expand abortion care” by creating an action plan that protects access to medication abortion and contraception, access to care under the law, protecting patient privacy, access to information and access to data. The executive order also instructs the administration to find pro-bono lawyers who will represent abortion providers and abortion seekers. Biden signed an another executive order in August to ensure patients can still travel out of state to receive an abortion.
He released a proclamation on Thursday restating his commitment to “defend reproductive rights” ahead of Women’s Equality Day on Friday.
“This commitment is more important than ever in the wake of the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate a woman’s constitutional right to choose. My Administration is doing everything in its power to protect access to the reproductive health care that generations of women and activists have fought for, including abortion,” Biden said.
