Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom doubled down on the state’s “transition” to green energy despite recent energy shortages during a Wednesday speech.

“Accordingly, we recognize that we need to do more in de-risking our transition to green energy,” Newsom said in the speech live-streamed on Twitter, “Don’t think for a second… we’re not doing anything except accelerating, I mentioned what we’re doing on permitting and procurement, accelerating that transition to low-carbon, renewable sources of energy.” (RELATED: ‘What The Green New Deal Looks Like’: Tucker Hammers AOC Over Sri Lanka Collapse)

Newsom’s comments come in the wake of reports that the California legislature voted Wednesday night to keep a nuclear power plant in operation to address energy shortages. The state advised electric vehicle owners to not charge their vehicles between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. due to a heat wave that posed risk of blackouts.

“The power grid operator expects to call on Californians for voluntary energy conservation via Flex alerts over the long weekend,” the California Independent System Operator alert said. “During a Flex Alert, consumers are urged to reduce energy use from 4-9 p.m. when the system is most stressed because demand for electricity remains high and there is less solar energy available.”

“The top three conservation actions are to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles, and turn off unnecessary lights. Lowering electricity use during that time will ease strain on the system, and prevent more drastic measures, including rotating power outages,” the alert continued.

The California Air Resources Board is considering an electric vehicle mandate that would include fines of $20,000 per vehicle that doesn’t meet quotas set by the state.

Newsom did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
