A full 73% of Americans believe there should be a maximum age limit for elected officials, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll released Thursday.

Among Democrats, 71% believed there should be a maximum age limit for elected officials, while 75% of independents and 75% of Republican concurred. (RELATED: ’75 Million People As The Enemy’: State Attorney General Eric Schmitt Rips Into Biden For ‘Divisive’ Speech)

When asked what age the maximum limit should be, 70 was the choice most selected by respondents. Forty percent of those in favor of an age limit chose 70, while 18% chose a maximum age of 80. An additional 26% of respondents who supported an age limit wanted to ban people over 60 from serving in public office, and another 8% wanted a cut-off age of 50.

Fully 67% of the total U.S. population favor a maximum age limit that would bar the 79-year-old President Joe Biden from serving a second term as president or even finishing his current term.

Biden would be 82 years old on Inauguration Day 2025. A third of current United States Senators are over 70, CBS News notes.

An age limit for elected officials was most popular among individuals between the ages of 30 and 64, with 75% in favor, according to the poll. Sixty-eight percent of those between the ages of 18 and 29 also believed there should be a maximum age limit.

An anonymous former Democratic strategist expressed concern in June that Biden was too, “fucking old” to successfully serve a second presidential term. The following month, former Biden campaign surrogate Kevin Walling described Biden as a “spry 79-year-old,” dismissing concerns about his declining health.

A New York Times/Siena College poll conducted in early July found that just 26% of Democrats wanted Biden, the oldest president in American history, to be re-nominated by the party in 2024. Among Democratic respondents, Biden’s age was the most popular reason given for why he should not be the party’s nominee.
