Famous R&B Artist Jesse Powell Dead At 51

R&B sensation Jesse Powell died in his Los Angeles home at the age of 51, Powell’s sister Tamara announced Tuesday night.

Tamara shared the news of her brother’s passing on social media Tuesday night, but the cause of Powell’s death has not been revealed. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother and uncle Jesse Powell,” she wrote. “Jesse loved music and he especially loved his fans who supported him throughout his career,” Tamara continued in the post on Instagram.

A music producer discovered Powell’s artistic talents when Powell performed at a local talent show around his hometown of Gary, Indiana, according to TMZ. Powell was loved by his many fans, and became especially popular after rising to the top of the music charts with the release of his 1998 hit song “You,” the outlet continued.

The artist reached No. 2 on the Billboard R&B charts with the release of “You,” and continued to soar with his second album, “‘Bout It.” That album was well received by fans across the globe, becoming certified gold after reaching No. 15 on the charts, the outlet reported. (RELATED: Research Suggests These Are The Top 10 Sleep-Inducing Country Music Songs)

Powell had a signature sound and was highly regarded for his astounding four-octave vocal range. He retired from music in 2003 after releasing his fourth album, according to TMZ.

Tamara spoke for the family on Instagram, acknowledging how much Powell’s fans meant to him.

“The family asks for privacy at this time as we mourn this tremendous loss and celebrate his everlasting legacy.
We want you all to know that you meant the world to him, ~The Powell Family,” Tamara wrote to Instagram.
