New York City Mayor Eric Adams released a statement announcing a migrant woman died by suicide on Sunday in a New York City shelter.

“The thousands of asylum seekers we have seen arrive in our city came to this country seeking a better life,” Mayor Adams said in a statement released Monday. “Sadly though, yesterday, an asylum seeker in one of our facilities took her own life.”

“Our hearts break for this young woman and any loved ones she may have, and we, as a city mourn her. This tragedy is a reminder that we have an obligation to do everything in our power to help those in need,” he added.

For legal reasons, the city cannot release further information at this time, the statement explained. (RELATED: ‘It Is Time For Us To Coordinate This Humanitarian Crisis’: Eric Adams Addresses New York’s Migrant Surge)

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began busing migrants from the southern border to New York City, a self-described “sanctuary city,” in August.

“I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief,” Abbott said in a statement at the time.

Adams has criticized the move, claiming the city’s resources cannot sustain the thousands of migrants coming to the city.

“[T]he city’s system is nearing its breaking point,” Adams said.
