A second middle school student died in hospital Saturday after a student rowing club boat capsized on Lake Fairview, Orlando, the previous Thursday.

Five middle school students were practicing near the North Orlando Rowing Complex in Lake Fairview, Orlando, when lightning struck the vessel either directly or nearby, according to CNN. Three students were treated at the scene and subsequently released to their parents, whereas another was hospitalized immediately following the strike, the outlet noted.

The body of a missing fifth child was recovered on Friday, according to another CNN report. The hospitalized child reportedly died on Saturday, the outlet noted.

“It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of a second rower involved in last Thursday’s weather-related tragedy,” the club wrote on their Facebook page, Saturday. The identities of the children have not been released, CNN noted.

Four people were critically injured earlier this year when lightning struck a tree outside of the White House, with two of the victims dying shortly afterwards. (RELATED: Insane Videos Show ‘Upwards’ Lightning In Kansas City)

Lightning is a major cause of storm-related deaths across the U.S. annually, causing victim’s hearts to stop at the moment of injury and potential irreversible brain damage, according to the National Weather Service. Only around 10% of those struck by lightning die, but 90% of those who survive are left with various degrees of disability, the NWS noted.
