An American Airlines flight reportedly made an emergency landing Wednesday night after some passengers and crew members became sick on board.

AA Flight 338 had left Miami International Airport and was headed for Barbados when a “chemical odor” spread throughout the cabin from a passenger’s carry-on bag, CBS News reported. The smell caused some travelers to feel sick, forcing the plane to reverse course, according to the news outlet. Hazmat units performed an assessment of the aircraft’s cabin due to reports of the strong chemical smell, the New York Post reported. One passenger reportedly described the smell as being similar to that of nail polish remover, or acetone.

Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue assessed the individuals who claimed to feel sick, and they reportedly transported five crew members to Jackson West Medical Center out of precaution.

There were 173 passengers on the flight, according to CBS News.

“The aircraft landed safely and without incident, and customers deplaned normally,” an American Airlines spokesperson told the NY Post. “All customers were offered hotel accommodations and the flight is now scheduled to redepart tomorrow at 9 a.m.” (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Arrest Warrants Count As ID For Illegal Migrants At Airport Security, TSA Says)

“Personally it didn’t have an effect on me, but I understand that a couple of other passengers felt sick. They might have been vomiting,” the passenger who described the scent told WSVN.

American Airlines has not released a statement or any further information on the incident.
