Florida police charged two men with attempted murder Thursday after a road rage incident led to their two respective children being injured by gunfire.

As William Hale, 35, and Frank Allison, 43, traveled along U.S. Route 1 near Jacksonville on Oct. 8, they got involved in what Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper described as a “cat and mouse” game, according to CNN. Both drivers drove erratically — speeding and brake checking each other — before the situation escalated, resulting in both men exchanging gunfire.

Allison fired upon Hale to “get out of the whole situation” after Hale pulled up beside him and began shouting at him through the passenger side window, according to authorities. When Allison rolled down his window to respond, a water bottle was thrown at him, prompting Allison to fire a shot with his .45 caliber handgun and drive away, CNN reported.

That shot, according to investigators, injured Hale’s five-year old daughter in the leg and prompted Hale to fire 7 or 8 rounds from his Glock towards Allison’s vehicle. A bullet then hit Allison’s 14-year old daughter in the back, causing her lung to collapse, CNN reported.

Once both men spotted a Nassau County patrol car, they pulled over and began “arguing and fighting” with each other, prompting the deputy to break up the fight, according to WJTV. Both men were arrested and charged with attempted murder while the children were transported to hospitals with non-threatening injuries, CNN reported. “Thankfully, no one was killed in this incident, but it could have easily turned out that way because two people were acting stupid and let their tempers get the best of them,” Leeper said, according to WJTV.  “It could have been two dead kids because of two stupid grown men.”
