A man suspected of murdering six people in California over the past year was arrested by Stockton police early Saturday morning just before he was allegedly ready to murder again.

“Our surveillance team followed this person while he was driving. We watched his patterns and determined early this morning he was on a mission to kill. He was out hunting,” Stockton Police Chief Stanley McFadden stated according to KCRA News. (RELATED: ‘Shopping Cart Killer’ May Be Responsible For 4 Deaths In Virginia, Suspect in Custody)

Wesley Brownlee, 43, was arrested after tips called into the police department led investigators to Brownlee’s home following a release of video surveillance footage of the suspected serial killer, CBS News reported.

Six men from Stockton and Oakland were shot to death over the past year. A seventh victim, a woman and the only known survivor of these attacks, biked to an encampment in Stockton in April 2021 where she was shot by a man wearing dark clothing and dark face mask, according to KCRA News. The woman told police that no words were exchanged between herself and her assailant before he shot her “multiple times,” the news outlet reported.

According to McFadden, Brownlee was dressed all in black, had a black mask around his neck and had a firearm in his possession when police apprehended him. Authorities also stated that ballistics evidence has linked the same gun to the murders, CBS News reported.

“The crime was solved because we’re Stockton. You don’t come to our house and bring this reign of terror,” San Joaquin County District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar said of the arrest, according to KCRA News.

Though Brownlee has been arrested, McFadden warned that the murders were still under “active investigation” and police are still asking for more tips to aid their endeavor. Stockton police have provided a tip line for people to submit information at (209) 937-8167, or email it to policetips@stocktonca.gov, according to KCRA News.
