A black bear attacked a 10-year-old child while he was playing in his grandparent’s yard Sunday in Morris, Connecticut.

The child was playing by the trampoline in his grandparent’s yard when the 250-pound black bear came out of the woods near the house, according to USA Today.

James Butler, the child’s grandfather, watched the attack unfold, according to the outlet.

“I heard him yell ‘bear’ and when I looked up, I saw his leg in the bear’s mouth and the bear trying to drag him across the lawn,” Butler said, according to USA Today. (RELATED: Bear Attacks Man And 9-Year-Old Boy, Sending Them To Hospital)

Butler, who is in a wheelchair, moved closer to the bear and threw a piece of metal towards the animal’s head, the outlet reported. The bear initially released the child, but then grabbed him a second time. A neighbor heard the child’s screams, came over to the yard and tried to scare the bear with a pipe and by yelling, USA Today reported.

Butler was able to get the child inside before the bear returned and looked at them through a screen door, according to USA Today. The child was then taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The bear was still nearby when officials arrived and was euthanized, USA Today reported.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller’s request for comment.
